Modern industrial systems combine physical processes, instrumentation, programmable controllers, communication networks, supervisory software, and enterprise data services. This course develops the ability to trace and reason across that full chain. Students learn how sensing and control decisions become network messages, how network behavior affects physical performance, and how engineering evidence supports reliable and secure operation.

The course is simulation-first and system-oriented. Examples are drawn from energy infrastructure, manufacturing, petrochemical facilities, pumping systems, electrical substations, transportation systems, and other critical infrastructure. Vendor platforms are used as examples, but the course emphasizes transferable engineering principles rather than product certification.

Prerequisites

Students are encouraged to have completed at least one course in Signals and Systems, Control Systems, Embedded Systems, or Digital Systems. Familiarity with basic programming and TCP/IP is helpful but not required. Students from electrical engineering, computer engineering, computer science, and related disciplines are welcome.
